The disease of addiction can feel like a prison with no way out. When we receive the gift of true desperation and humbly ask for help, we can begin a journey of recovery that will take us places we never would have imagined on our own. That first step - admitting that we are powerless over our disease and have lost control of our lives - can be so difficult. But when we're ready, we will find brothers and sisters in recovery - and a Higher Power - ready, willing and able to help us move forward.
In short, there is a solution! All you have to do to begin your own journey of recovery is accept that you need help and reach out. My own path forward started with a simple prayer: God, please help me! I began attending 12-Step meetings, praying and reading recovery literature and the Psalms the next day. By the grace of God, I haven't had to take a drink since.
When you are ready to take that first step, you can find recovery resources near you by calling 1-800-662-HELP (4357) or click on the button below. Right now, you might feel far away from the clean and sober life you want. But as the Chinese proverb attributed to Lao Tzu says, even a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
